Article 1. City Elections

The non-partisan election of city officials shall be conducted in all respects as provided by the laws of Kansas governing the holding of city elections.

At all city elections the polls shall be open at 7:00 a.m. and close at 7:00 p.m., unless different hours are set and publicly announced by the county election officer.

(a)   Those governing body positions with terms expiring in November 2021, shall expire on the first Monday in December of 2021, when the city officials elected in the November 2021 general election take office. Those governing body positions with terms expiring in November 2023, shall expire on the first Monday in December of 2023, when the city officials elected in the November 2023 general election take office.

(b)   A general election of city officers take place on the Tuesday succeeding the first Monday in November 2017. Succeeding elections will be held every two years for all such governing body positions whose terms have expired. One council member from each ward shall be elected at one election, and the other council member from that ward shall be elected at the succeeding election. The council members shall have four-year terms. The Mayor shall have a two-year term.

The terms of officers elected shall commence on the second Monday in January following certification of the election, and the elected officers shall qualify by taking the oath or affirmation of office to be filed with the city clerk.

In accordance with K.S.A. 25-205 and K.S.A. 25-21a01 et seq., any person may become a candidate for city office by having had filed, on their behalf, either of the following:

(a)   a declaration of candidacy, accompanied by any fee required by law; or

(b)   a nomination petition. The nomination petition must be signed by ten qualified electors of the city.
